The Definition of a Motorhome

Let’s start with what counts as a motorhome. This type of RV is distinguished by its drivetrain. This means you simply drive the rig instead of towing it behind a commuter car. This style of camper can often tow a car itself. All of these campers feature the basic travel necessities like a bedroom, kitchen, and bathroom. Some even offer more luxurious features.

There are three categories of motorhomes: Class A, Class B, and Class C. Each has their own design and appeal.

Class A Motorhome

Size

  • The largest classification.
  • Usually between 30 and 45 feet long.
  • Tends to include at least two slide-outs.
  • Features high interior height.

Design

  • Resembles a bus (features a commercial bus chassis).
  • Designed with a flat front and a wide front window.
  • Driving cab is integrated with the rest of the camper.

Class A models offer the most space in an RV, but this comes at the cost of handling and fuel economy.

Class B Motorhome

Size

  • The smallest option.
  • Doesn’t usually come with slide-outs.

Design

  • Built with a van-style chassis.

Class B rigs are ideal for solo or a pair of travelers since they have less interior space and offer more basic features. However, the design of these rigs make them easy to handle and they offer the best fuel economy.

Class C Motorhome

Size

  • This is the mid-range sized option.
  • Usually between 25 and 30 feet long.
  • Tends to come with slideouts to increase the interior space.

Design

  • Resembles a truck thanks to the truck chassis.
  • Designed with the driving cab separate from the rig.
  • Features a cab-over profile that creates extra space for storage or a bedroom.

It is fairly easy to drive a Class B motorhome since the center of gravity is similar to a standard vehicle. These campers offer decent fuel economy and usually come with convertible furniture.
